Assessment

The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent in this unit.
You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements at every stage of your learning and study and can get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Source and use information on the tourism and travel industry unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.


Session 1 - What is the Tourism Industry? - Pink tiles
This topic explores what is the tourism industry and where we can access information. We will also look at the structure and interrelationships of the tourism industry and how important it is to stay up to date with our knowledge. You may like to think about the following:
What would be an example of a good source of information on the tourism industry? How do you know this is a good source?
Discuss the importance of different sectors working together in the tourism industry. Provide a specific example in your discussion.
How does knowledge of the tourism industry enhance the quality of work performance? Provide an example.
Sharing updated knowledge with colleagues is important, explain why and give an example.

Session 2 - Technology and careers in the tourism industry - Aqua Tiles
Firstly we will look at careers in the tourism industry and then technology and how it impacts job roles and the toruism industry in general. You may like to think about the following:
What recent technology have you downloaded that has helped you in your day to day activities.
Investigate a current or emerging technology and explain how this will impact on your operational duties working within the tourism industry.
Research a job in the tourism industry that you are interested in. What are the roles and responsibilities?

Session 3 - Legal and ethical requirements in the tourism industry - Yellow Tiles 
This topic will look at the basic aspects of key laws that are relevant to the tourism industry and ethical issues required in day to conduct day to day tourism activities. You may like to think about the following:
There are many laws that the tourism industry must adhere to. What are the consequences of not working compliantly? Provide an example.
What are the implications of not following ethical industry practices. Provide an example.
Research a quality assurance scheme in the tourism industry and identify the organisational benefits of participating in the scheme and the roles and responsibilities required by the organisation/individual.

Session 4 - Current issues and trends in the tourism industry - Red Tiles
Firstly we will have a look at how tourism impacts on the community and then we will monitor current issues and trends. You may like to think about the following:
Research an emerging ‘trend’ within the tourism industry. In your response, state your own opinion – will it last or will it just be a fad?
Discuss a current topic or issue within the tourism industry that has caused a negative environmental, social or cultural impact. What evidence supports this?
“All tourism has a positive impact on local communities”. Do you agree or disagree, explain why providing examples.
